# Character Creation
1. **Once you start rolling dice (attributes, HP, or starting GP), no takebacks**. If you don't like your rolls, tough.
1. Generally, if you want to make some changes to fit your character idea, ask! I'm pretty open to it, and while I might not always say yes, I'll at least offer an alternative. Anything aesthetic-only will almost certainly be approved (ex. changing spell descriptions without changing game effects, or changing what starting equipment looks like).

Aldenmarsh uses silver bits (cp), silver coins (sp), and silver rounds (gp)--silver coins in three sizes. Silver or gold bars are often used for very large sums of money. The coins are minted by the Silver Hall, and used everywhere in the region, not just Aldenmarsh.
In Aldenmarsh, gems are valuable but rarely used as money.

Aldenmarsh years are 350 days long. The calendar drifts about two weeks a year (it doesn't match how long seasons are)
Aldenmarsh's year system is numbered from the founding of Aldenmarsh. Each year is divided exactly into 50 weeks of 7 days each. Aldenmarsh hasn't used months for a couple centuries. Normally the date is writteh like: "Year 422, Charity 43", which would be followed by "Year 422, Patience 44".

The Hundred Wonders were created about 800 years ago, the same time arcane magic appeared in the world. The origins of most of them are uncertain--they appeared very suddenly, sometimes causing huge or violent change. The name is not literal--there is no complete list of wonders, but there are 50-200 of them in the world.

+## About the Black Oracle
+
+- The Black Oracle is a magical artifact, a huge stone set of lips. It is one of the Hundred Wonders.
+- The oracle answers any factual question put to it which can be answered in a few words. It only ever answers one question per person, but it answers up to 14 questions per year. It has between 0 and 14 questions remaining this year.
+- If a question cannot be answered in a few words, or if it is nonsense, the oracle says nothing. If two consecutive questions are not answered, that person is counted as having received an answer, and one of its 14 questions has been used up.
+- It can answer questions in any language, but please ask all questions exactly as phrased, in the original language.
+- Light interfere with the oracle--questions asked in light may not work, or may receive incorrect answers.
+It answers all questions said aloud in the room. Avoid asking questions while on your mission for safety.
+- After it has answered 14 questions, or if it is exposed to magical light, it teleports hundreds of miles.
+
+## Instructions from the Canyonport Mages Guild
+
+*Segarellion says: As a group, you will be paid 1000sp per question answered. If any volunteers die, their next of kin will be paid 1000sp in hazard pay.*
+
+You will need to bring a group of at least 14 people to the Black Oracle, and ask it questions on behalf of the Mages' Guild.
+
+Ask these exact questions, in this exact order (skipping as instructed). Have at least two separate people record all answers carefully.
+
+01. What is the number written on a piece of paper in the red-stained lockbox of the Chief Warlock of the Mage's Guild in Four Spires?
+02. Where can a naturally petrified wyvern be found?
+03. Where is the nearest book on coldbliss?
+04. Only if there is no answer to #3: Is there a book on coldbliss?
+05. Where is the nearest permanent portal to Faerie?
+06. How many spies are in the high council of the Mages' Guild of Aldenmarsh?
+07. Only if the answer to #6 was TWO OR HIGHER: What are the first and last initials of the spies on the high council of the Mages' Guild of Aldenmarsh?
+08. Only if the answer to #5 is outside the Magic Sea: Who will willingly provide the greatest assistance to the Mages Guild of Aldenmarsh in creating a 300-foot diameter, permanent portal to Faerie?
+09. Only if the answer to #6 is ONE OR HIGHER: When is the next currently planned invasion of Aldenmarsh by another country?
+10. Only if the answer to #9 is in the next 10 years: Elaborate, who plans to invade Aldenmarsh?
+11. When was the Black Oracle created?
+12. Where is the nearest permanent portal to another plane?
+13. D'lak, h'lath, d'clin, wurglen.
+14. Who last saw Septimare alive?
+15. Who is the closest living relative of King Johann Goldmiller II of Aldenmarsh?
+16. Only if the answer to #11 is between 450 and 468 years ago: Was the Black Oracle created by coldbliss?
+16. Only if the answer to #11 is between 473 and 500 years ago: Was the Black Oracle created by coldbliss?
+17. If the answer to #13 was D'lan: Prang hotep, e jangro da?
+18. Where is the material plane?
+19. Only if no answer to #18: What is the material plane?

+**Truth** - "See what is, ignore what is not," these are the words of our Holy **Lord Baneth**. I will try to speak as plainly and briefly as possible, although it does not come naturally to me. The Church of **Baneth** has not seen **His** light in hundreds of years, although **His** eye watches us everywhere. We have strayed from his command. The Church has become a political institution, as is plain to any child. This is not a new change, but being old does not make something right. **Baneth** issued no special command to **His** priests to tell others what to do. We have no special guidance from Him, beyond our own dubious wisdom, protect us from hubris. It was not right to exert our will over the will of our follow citizens. It was not right, is not right, and it must stop. The Church must return from a political to a religious body.
+
+**Charity** - The Church should offer free education to all. The Church, as much as possible, and it is possible today with no changes, should offer free healing to all.
+
+**Patience** - The truth of **Baneth** will come to all in time. The Church must cut ties with the government immediately. It must relinquish control of its council seats. It mush relinquish the Steel for the use of the country, except a small force for the use of the Church. It must relinquish the Scriptoria.
+
+**Silence** - The Church must remove that which is unneccessary. Sermons must be restricted only to scripture of His word and life. If needed, we will erect new churches in the country. The Doctrine of Primacy is not sciptoral and must be rejected.
+
+**Loyalty** - The Gardeners, although they have provided a great service with their education to all, are not part of the Holy Church. The Church must cut ties with the Gardeners immediately. The Church must cut ties with the nobility of Aldenmarsh immediately.
+
+**Light** - Above all else, we must re-establish conversation with **Baneth**.
+
+**Family** - All have possibility in **Baneth**'s eyes. The Aldish Church of **Baneth** must become the Church of **Baneth**. Restrictions on non-Aldish priests must be lifted, and we will send missionaries abroad.

+Signed, Laurel Fallenditch, Priest of **Baneth** and sixth generation Aldish citizen

+Dear Cal,
+
+I hope this letter finds you safe. I would have preferred to tell you such personal news crammed like fish in a barrel and not tossing it over a gulch, but I understand travel is difficult. This mail is safe from any wrong eyes.
+
+I've briefly met your parents decades ago, though I didn't know them well. They were Neville and Linda Jorvik. Neville Jorvik was a knight from Lorille, who immigrated to Aldenmarsh. Linda Kingstone was noble, and her family disowned her for marrying Neville. Both were half elvish, knock on wood. Neville was in the Watch, and Linda joined afterwards. That's why the Watch made sure to raise you. Every detail we know about how who killed them, we know from asking you as a child. We looked through the house but didn't find any clear signs. I don't know any more than you do.
+
+I will pass your message on to Scarra. I'm sure he will be proud.

+Dear Cal,
+
+I won't be home, unfortunately. I'll be out fishing with Jacob on his boat for the next three weeks. It is the 51st of the year as I write this. But, you're welcome to stop by. I'd enjoy a spar, though I'm sure I'll regret it the morning after.
+
+Congratulations on finding work. Congratulations also on your new allies. If they prove fast, perhaps you should introduce us. A friend of Cal is a friend of mine.
+
+Stand strong with Baneth. Only fight when it upholds the peace--do not be too eager to strike down evil doers. None of us is perfect.

# The Watch
The Watch is an international force of good in the continent. They are made up of paladins, clerics, and other do-gooders of all faiths. They help people and make the world better wherever they can. They don't respect government authority, and in Aldenmarsh they operate illegally and secretly. There is no international headquarters or authority--groups of Watch members in each country decide what to do independently.
